The concept of any wash has now become a regular feature in UNILAG.Join me in the journey to trace the origin and the financial implication of any wash system of laundering.Any wash is a system of advanced laundering services render by the women that maintain all the hostel facilities on a daily basis. It is such that the women on a daily basis in the morning goes from one room to another shouting ANY WASH to create an impression that they are available to collect and wash the students clothes for a fee usually ranging from N30 to 100 depending on whether the clothe is a shirt, jeans, or other though materials.Available records showed that the history of any wash is as old as the hostels on campuse, probably as old as ELKANEMI HOSTEL. The system developed when the need to wash student clothes arose couple with the tight schedule of the students as regards lecture hours, the provision for the need was quickly hijacked by the women that are assigned to each individual hostel who compete every morning to collect and wash student’s clothes for a fee.As Noble as the idea seems, it is associated with a lot of inconveniences as regard the disturbances that the women generate when advertising or soliciting for students clothes, as early as seven am in the morning the women can be observed shouting any wash from room to room. Our statistics showed that at least in a day ANY WASH will visit a room 10 times meaning the shout of ANY WASH is likely to wake you up in the morning till you are unable to sleep any longer. Another disturbing aspect of the ANY WASH system is that the women-dry cleaner make use of hard scrubbing brush on all the categories of clothes given to them thereby reducing the life span of the cloth by half of its useful life.However the most astonishing part of the whole thing is that they deliver your clothes to you in good time even during raining seasons which validates the consistent patronage they keep receiving from the students every semester.THE FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONThe ANY WASH woman goes home every month with at least 7000 and the figure can go up as high as 9000 especially when students resume afresh. If you multiply 7000 with 30 days you know what you are up to and you must bear in mind that they don’t pay tax in any form therefore the any wash concept is a kind of cool business where you can make your money without much ado or publicity.The any wash women are so committed to their trade that they are known to have some addicted customers, such customers will never give their clothes to any other any wash even if their own any wash is not around.HUMOUR OF ANY WASHThe any wash concept is not restricted to any hostel in particular, rather it is the norm and rule aIn every hostel including the reserved first class hostel of MARIERE AND MOREMI TO the extent that some guys and ladies mimic the any wash women especially IN THE early morning or late in the night. The main thing is that while the any wash women are making their money, the students are happy and satisfied with the level of service that the any wash women renders. There is a lecturer in the University of Lagos that teaches political science {POL114} in the department of social sciences. Ordinarily, this lectures very well but the extra ordinary thing about this man is that he is a die hard fan of Fela Anikulapo Kuti and by extension he is also a priest at Fela’s shrine, infact his car plate number reads thus: FELA, THE ABAMI EDA LIVES ON.This lecturer never sees anything good in Obasanjo’s government and therefore uses policies and programmes. This lecturer drives to set of cars, the first one looks typically like that of MR BIN’S car….
